About Me
At heart, I am a designer focused on design respectful towards and reflective of place. This includes all aspects of sustainable design, critical regionalism, and a deliberate focus on the ecology of place and using the natural design of a site to influence the man made design interventions.
My design background began as a child watching my grandfather build his own home. His hexagonal house opened me to thinking outside the traditional forms of residential design, and initialized the spark driving me towards my professional career. I started to develop those professional interests after high school. In my undergraduate experience, I learned to design buildings from an artistic standpoint. My studies gave me a solid background in the artistic design basics, (space generation and progression, rhythm, structure, proportion, and the skills necessary to represent them) along with the ability to visualize and translate a conceptual idea into built form. After school, I gained experience in both design and construction working on a number of independent projects as well as working full-time in a firm doing high-end residential design and construction at Hamady Architects in Charlottesville, VA (www.hamadyarchitectsllc.com). In this small firm and on my own, I gained experience in detailing, drawing set production, project management, and contracting.
In my graduate studies, I was first exposed towards critical regionalism and I have worked to focus my education towards gaining the technical skills to design within the framework of the world around us. Those studies provided me with the technical skills to analyze a site and make an informed response with my design proposal in order to create a building that will have a benefit to its environment. For the past 3 years, I have worked full-time in the office of Obie Bowman in Healdsburg, CA (www.obiebowman.com) for the purpose of developing the skills necessary to combine the artistic side of my undergraduate experience with the technical side of my graduate experience in an attempt to develop an understanding of how to create design which enhances and reflects a typology specific to place. Concurrently, I gained experience in design development, drawing set production, and worked as a project manager on multiple projects. I continue to build furniture in my spare time.
